Vigneswar Temple Ozar

The seventh temple in the series of Ashtavinayak Temples is the Vigneswar temple in Ozar, situated 10 km away from Junnar and 102 km away from Pune. The temple was renovated by Chimaji Appa, the younger brother of Peshwa Bajirao I, with a golden shikara after the victory against the Portuguese.

According to the Mudgala Purana, King Abhinandana, the ruler of Hemavati, refused a sacrifice to Indra, which offended him. Indra ordered Kala to destroy King Abhinandan’s sacrifice. Kala took the form of Vingnasura and destroyed the king’s sacrifice. Vignasura did not stop with the destruction, but created havoc across the world, creating obstacles in each good deed that was happening in the world. All the sages prayed to Lord Ganesha to stop the atrocities of Vignasura. Lord Ganesha heard the prayers and started fighting the demon. The demon accepted the defeat and agreed not to harass the beings on Earth who invoke Ganesha’s blessings. The demon requested Ganesha to take the name of Vigneswar and stay at Ozar.

The idol of Vigneswar is Swayambhu, with its trunk turning to the left, at the temple, which is an east-facing spacious courtyard. On praying at Vigneswar Temple in Ozar, it is believed that all the obstacles of life are overcome and prosperity is attained.
