Navaratri songs, bhajans and mantras — a guide for the nine nights
Why Navaratri Songs Important?
Music and devotion have always been closely connected in India. During Navaratri songs are used as a tool of creating a prayerful atmosphere and gathering of the whole family.
Navaratri songs can be used during:
- Morning Devi puja
- Evening aarti
- Navadurga worship
- Golu gatherings
- Bhajan sessions
- Temple celebrations
- Garba and Dandiya performances
- Ashtami and Navami celebrations
- Havan and other special prayers
Many families use songs as a way of preserving the traditions. Grandparents can teach traditional bhajans to grandchildren while young members of a family can bring new devotional songs into the celebration.
Navratri Bhajans for the Spiritual Celebration
Navratri bhajans are an easy way to spend your time devoted to the festival. Bhajans dedicated to Durga Maa, Amba, Jagadamba, Mahishasura Mardini and other forms of Shakti can be used during the morning or evening puja.
It is not necessary to look for difficult and special Navratri bhajan. Simple devotional songs sung by the whole family are already enough.
You can create your own bhajan session at home. You will just need to light a diya, offer flowers to Devi, chant a mantra and sing two-three devotional songs. Even children can take part in the session and sing devotional verses and take part in the aarti.
GIRI's Navaratri collection offers you devotional books and other worship-related items that you can use during the festival. Its Navaratri Poojai Sanskrit-Tamil book contains hymns, mantras, stotras and shlokas relating to Navaratri worship.
Navaratri Durga Songs for Devi Worship
Among all devotional music that are connected with Navaratri, the navaratri Durga songs play an especially important role. Goddess Durga is worshipped as the Divine Mother and as a symbol of Shakti.
Navaratri songs dedicated to the Divine Mother can be used during the nine days, especially during the morning and evening puja. Devotees usually prefer devotional music during Ashtami and Navami, when special prayers are performed in different traditions.
You can choose songs depending on the form of Devi worshipped by you, or just use traditional Durga bhajans that speak about the glory, compassion and power of the Goddess.
You should not try to find a long complicated playlist. A few meaningful songs, sung or played with devotion will be enough.
Garba Lyrics and Navratri Songs for the Festive Celebration
For many devotees the festival is connected with the fun of Garba and Dandiya. In the evening devotees get dressed in colorful traditional dresses, decorate the place and dance to devotional and festive music.
Garba lyrics are traditionally dedicated to Goddess Amba and Divine Femininity. A devotional meaning of the celebration is also reflected in the circular movement during the Garba around a lamp or other sacred object.
Navaratri playlist for a Garba evening can include:
- Traditional Garba songs
- Devotional songs of Devi
- Dandiya songs
- Bhajans in Gujarati language
- Folk Garba
- Modern devotional versions
Despite the festive nature of Garba, its connection with Devi worship remains its main element.
Navarathri Songs Tamil and the Beauty of Kolu
In Tamil Nadu and among Tamil speaking families, Navaratri is closely connected with Golu or Kolu. People arrange dolls and figurines on the steps and invite relatives, neighbors and friends to visit them.
During these visits navarathri songs Tamil are sung along with devotional compositions, bhajans and traditional prayers.
Kolu songs can include devotional songs dedicated to Devi, Lakshmi, Saraswati and other gods. Women and children can sing them together during visits to different houses.
GIRI's Navaratri collection includes Tamil devotional books such as Amman Arul Padalgal, Sri Kamakshi Amman Viruttam, Sri Devi Khadgamala Stotram and Navaratri Pujai - Tamil.
You will easily find traditional prayers and songs for your Navaratri celebration in them.
Navaratri Songs and Kolu: A Celebration of Togetherness
Golu is not only a decorative display. It becomes the place where families gather for prayer, music, storytelling and cultural exchange.
GIRI's Navaratri collection includes Golu Padi stands and covers, Golu Bommai in different materials, Devi related products, pooja articles and festive decorations.
Some Golu displays include dolls that represent devotional scenes, saints, deities and cultural stories. For example, GIRI's Golu collection includes devotional sets such as Pandurangan Bhajanai and other traditional scenes.
This simple home visit will become an interesting spiritual and cultural experience for you.
Navaratri Mantras for Daily Worship
Songs are used to express devotion in the form of music. Mantras are an even more focused way of chanting. Navaratri mantras are commonly used during the Devi puja, meditation and other forms of worship.
A well-known Durga mantra is:
Om Dum Durgayai Namah
Devotees can chant this mantra during the daily worship according to their family tradition.
You can use the practice of chanting mantras very simply. Just sit before the deity, light a diya, concentrate on the goddess and chant the chosen mantra.
Devotees, who want to use more traditional prayers, can use a devotional book that includes appropriate mantras, stotras and shlokas instead of selection chants from different sources.
Navratri Mantras for 9 Days
Nine days of Navaratri are dedicated to the nine forms of Goddess Durga, which are called Navadurga. During the festival a family can dedicate each day to one of the forms of Devi and include a prayer, song or mantra into its daily worship.
| Day | Form of Devi | Suggested practice |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Shailaputri | Devi song and a prayer |
| Day 2 | Brahmacharini | Bhajan and chanting of mantra |
| Day 3 | Chandraghanta | Durga song and aarti |
| Day 4 | Kushmanda | Devi bhajan and puja |
| Day 5 | Skandamata | Family prayer and devotional songs |
| Day 6 | Katyayani | Durga mantra and Devi song |
| Day 7 | Kalaratri | Devi stotra and prayer |
| Day 8 | Mahagauri | Ashtami bhajan and aarti |
| Day 9 | Siddhidatri | Navaratri songs and Navami prayer |
This nine day routine does not have to be complicated. Even 15-20 minutes of daily prayer can make the festival more connected and meaningful.
Navratri Hawan Mantra and Durga Mantra
Hawan is celebrated by many devotees during Navaratri, particularly as part of Ashtami or Navami depending on the region and family tradition.
During navratri hawan mantra ceremony devotees chant mantras while offering things to the sacred fire. The exact procedure and mantras used during the hawan depend on the tradition, sampradaya and purpose of the ceremony.
If you are celebrating hawan at home, it is better to follow the instructions of your family priest or some other traditional guide than mixing the procedures of different traditions.
For everyday Devi worship, you can use a simple Durga mantra according to your family tradition.
Those who want to perform a more detailed prayer can study collections of Durga names, stotras and Devi prayers, including forms of 108 names of the Goddess.
What Are 108 Durga Mantras?
The phrase 108 Durga mantra refers to the extended devotional chanting that is associated with the Goddess. 108 is a traditional number in Hindu worship and it is used for counting repetitions or names during japa.
During the festival devotees can chant the 108 names of Devi, Durga Ashtottara Shatanamavali or other prayer collections.
If you are not experienced in mantra chanting, it is better to begin with a prayer or a mantra that you understand and can chant with devotion.
Navratri Padalgal: Preserving Tamil Devotional Traditions
Navratri padalgal are an important part of the festive atmosphere for Tamil speaking families. These devotional songs can be sung during Golu visits, household puja and evening gatherings.
The Tamil devotional literature has an extensive tradition of songs dedicated to Amman and other forms of Devi. Tamil families can use devotional books to learn the lyrics of the songs, understand their meaning and teach them to the children.
GIRI's Tamil Navaratri collection includes books dedicated to Devi songs, stotras and Navaratri puja, which can become helpful resources for those, who want to preserve the Tamil devotional traditions at home.
How to Create Your Navaratri Songs Playlist

Navaratri songs — frequently asked questions
Are these Navaratri songs free to download?
Yes. Every recording on this page is a GIRI (Gitaa) production and free to play and download for your own home and pooja use. Please do not resell them or use them in paid advertising.
In what order should the Durga Saptashati be recited?
The page lists them in parayanam order. Begin with the sankalpam and nyasa, then Devi Kavacham, Argala Stotram, Keelakam and Ratri Suktam. Then the thirteen chapters in sequence, followed by the Rahasyams, Utkeelana and Kshama Prarthana. Many families read the whole Saptashati across the nine nights, a portion each day.
Can I play these during the pooja at home?
That is what they are for. Keep the phone or speaker beside the kalasam and play the chapter for that night, or let the Lakshmi and Saraswati sections run during the respective three nights of Navaratri.
Why are some recordings split into parts?
Two concert pieces run past twenty minutes — Devi Neeye Thunai in Keeravani and Enneramum in Poorvi Kalyani. They are offered as consecutive parts so each file downloads quickly on a phone. Play them back to back for the full rendition.
What is the difference between the versions of the same stotram?
Where a stotram appears more than once, these are different renditions — a different singer, tempo or arrangement, such as the chorus, karaoke and traditional versions of Aigiri Nandhini and Devichi Aarti. Listen and keep the one that suits your household.
What audio quality are the files?
MP3 at 192 kbps, 44.1 kHz stereo — full-length studio recordings, not clips. A few of the longest were encoded a little lower so they stay quick to download.
Which nights of Navaratri are for which goddess?
The usual South Indian observance gives the first three nights to Durga, the next three to Lakshmi and the last three to Saraswati, with Vijayadasami on the tenth day. The sections on this page follow that division.
Do you sell these as a CD or USB?
Yes. The full GIRI devotional catalogue is available on USB and as physical media — see the Devotional Music USB collection linked throughout this page.
