Girijatmaj is the sixth temple in the Ashtavinayak temple series, which is the only mountain temple amongst the eight temples. The name Girijatmaj means “Son of Girija of Parvati”. The temple has been built in the locale of Buddhist caves, which are known as Ganesh Gufa. The legend of Lenyadri states that Lord Ganesha is worshipped in this temple as an infant. The temple legend specifies that Goddess Parvati has done penance on this mountain to beget Lord Ganesha as her son.

The word Lenyadri means Mountain Cave, as per local legend, where Lena in Marathi is cave and Yadri in Sanskrit is mountain. The temple can be reached after climbing 307 to 315 steps.  The Lenyadri cave is always cool and clean in all weather conditions. The temple hall measures 51 feet wide, 53 feet long, and 7 feet tall with no supporting pillars.
Lenyadri is also known as Ganesh Lena or Ganesh Pahar, located about 4.8 km from Junnar in Pune. Lenayadri is 96 km away from Pune and can be reached in 2 hours and 45 minutes by road via NH60 Highway. Lenayadi is situated on the Northwest bank of the River Kukadi. The temple does not have electric lights but it is well lit by the direct sunlight it receives from the sun. Ganesh Jayanti and Ganesh Chaturthi are the most auspicious events celebrated at Lenaydri.
