Mahalaya Amavasya 2026: Importance, Customs and Why Do We Pay Tribute To Our Ancestors

Mahalaya Amavasya, otherwise known as Mahalaya, Pitru Amavasya and Sarva Pitru Amavasya and Pitru Moksha Amavasya is very holy day for paying tribute to our ancestors. It signifies the last day of Pitru Paksha during which Hindu households undertake Shraddha, Tarpan and other customs for their departed loved ones. In 2026, Mahalaya Amavasya will take place on 10 October.

Pitru means ancestors and Amavasya is a new moon day. This day is considered to be very important in Hindu culture as it allows Hindus to pay tribute to the previous generation. This is not just about performing customs; it is also about honoring one's roots and remembering their predecessors.

What is Mahalaya Amavasya?

Mahalaya Amavasya is the final day of Pitru Paksha, which is traditionally observed for remembering and paying respects to departed ancestors. During this period, families perform rituals according to the death anniversary or tithi of their ancestors. When the exact tithi is not known, Mahalaya Amavasya is traditionally considered an important day for offering Shraddha to them. The day is also called Sarva Pitru Amavasya, meaning Amavasya dedicated to all ancestors.

This is why it has special importance for families who may not know the exact date of an ancestor's passing. People also use this day to remember relatives and ancestors who may not have received regular Shraddha rituals.

For many families, Mahalaya Amavasya brings a quiet and emotional feeling. People remember their parents, grandparents and other elders who have passed away. Their teachings, values and memories become a part of the prayers offered on this day.

Why Do We Celebrate Mahalaya Amavasya?

The main reason for observing Mahalaya Amavasya is to show gratitude and respect towards our ancestors. Hindu tradition places importance on the contribution of previous generations. The family, culture, values and traditions we have today have been passed down through many generations.

According to traditional beliefs, performing Shraddha and Tarpan during Pitru Paksha helps provide peace to departed ancestors. Families believe that sincere offerings and prayers can help seek their blessings and bring harmony to the household. These are religious beliefs followed by many Hindu families and may vary across regions and communities.

The deeper meaning of the day can also be understood in a simple way. We pause our busy lives for a moment and remember the people because of whom our family exists today. It teaches younger generations about their roots and the importance of gratitude.

Mahalaya Amavasya Rituals

One of the main rituals performed on Mahalaya Amavasya is Pitru Tarpan, where water, usually accompanied by black sesame seeds, is offered while remembering the ancestors. Families may also perform Shraddha and Pind Daan, depending on their family traditions and regional practices.

Food offerings and charity are also an important part of the observance. Some families prepare traditional food and offer it as part of the Shraddha ritual. Feeding Brahmins, people in need or animals and donating food, clothes or other useful items are also followed in many communities.

The exact rituals can differ from one region to another. Some families visit sacred rivers or pilgrimage places, while others perform the rituals at home with the guidance of a priest. It is always better to follow the customs followed by your family and local tradition rather than trying to follow every ritual mentioned online.

Significance of Mahalaya Amavasya

The significance of Mahalaya Amavasya lies in the fact that the relationship with your ancestors doesn't just end after their death. Values and lessons imparted through stories by our ancestors remain alive in the family. Celebrating this day helps people honor and pay tribute to their ancestors.

Besides being a day of praying and offering charity in the name of ancestors, people celebrate Mahalaya Amavasya because it's the day on which people bond with each other and express gratitude to their ancestors. Therefore, celebrating this day is an important step for families.

Mahalaya also holds cultural importance in West Bengal as it marks the beginning of the Durga Puja celebrations. The transition from the period of remembering ancestors ends and Devi Paksha begins on Mahalaya Amavasya day.

Observing Mahalaya Amavasya at Home

Those who are unable to visit temples or pilgrimage sites can also perform Mahalaya Amavasya at home depending on their family traditions. People can start observing the day by taking a bath and performing prayers. Performing Tarpan or Shraddha ceremonies can also be a part of their tradition.
