Bhadrapada Purnima 2026: Fasting, Rituals, and Honoring Your Ancestors
Bhadrapada Purnima is a significant Full Moon day in the Hindu Calendar falling in the month of Bhadrapada. This is an auspicious occasion for fasting, prayers, charities and paying tributes to departed ancestors. In 2026, Bhadrapada Purnima was observed on Saturday, September 26 in India. The Purnima Tithi falls between September 25 and September 26.
Also called Purnima Shraddha, Shraddhi Purnima or Proshthapadi Purnima Shraddha, the day has its own connection with ancestral traditions and occurs just before Pitru Paksha. However, Bhadrapada Purnima Shraddha is not really a part of Pitru Paksha which starts from the next day onwards according to the normal calendar flow.
Significance of Bhadrapada Purnima Vrat
This day is believed to be an ideal occasion for performing spiritual activities. People may observe fasts, offer prayers to Lord Vishnu and listen to spiritual stories. Some devotees also perform Satyanarayana Puja asking God for blessings and happiness of the whole family. Observing a fast on the auspicious day is considered to be the means to discipline the body and mind for worship.
Charity is another important aspect of the day when people give food items, clothing, grains or any other useful articles to the poor and needy persons. Bathing in holy water, offering prayers and doing meditation are also considered to be good activities on the holy day. The idea is to utilize the entire day in a spiritual manner rather than simply doing some rituals.
The full moon day is traditionally associated with Lord Chandra. In many families, devotees offer Arghya to the Moon in the evening. Some people may opt for a simple fast while others prefer fruit or sattvic fast according to the family traditions.
Why Is Purnima Shraddha Performed?
Purnima Shraddha is done in order to pay tributes to the deceased relatives and ancestors. The word 'Shraddha' derives its origin from the word 'श्रद्धा'. It denotes faith and deep respect that people have towards their ancestors.
As per some traditional sources, Bhadrapada Purnima holds its significance among all other Shraddha occasions. It is considered a suitable day for doing Parvan Shraddha and Tarpanam. There are also some traditional references regarding offering Shraddha to ancestors belonging to past generations and maternal side on this day.
Thus, the observance is not only about performing the rituals but about remembering the family roots and showing gratitude to their ancestors. Many families consider this as a quiet time for praying to ancestors for peace.
How Is Bhadrapada Purnima Observed?
People usually start their day by having a bath and praying to Gods. If people opt for observing Purnima Vrat, they may keep a fast according to the family traditions. Lord Vishnu or Satyanarayana may be worshipped and the devotees may either listen to or read some spiritual stories. Some devotees also conduct Satyanarayana Katha at their homes.
For Purnima Shraddha, the rituals are normally performed during the daytime, especially during the recommended period for Shraddha. Tarpan is usually done as part of the observance. As the rituals may differ depending upon family traditions, regional practices and Panchang, it is better to consult an experienced priest for proper procedure.
