Navatirupathi Series- Srivaikuntam Temple

A temple devoted to Lord Vishnu, revered by Nammalvar as a part of Navatirupati, Srivaikuntam is located on the banks of the River Tamiraibarani. The temple is 22 km away from Tirunelveli, situated in the town of Srivaikuntam in the Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu. According to Vaishnav Sampradayam, this temple is also a part of the 108 Divya Desam temples

The temple is depicted as the Navagraha temple according to the Vaishnav Sampradayam and is associated with Surya Bhagawan, also known as the Sun God. According to the Brahmanda Purana, written by the Great Sage Veda Vyasa, a chapter called Navathirupathi Mahahmeeyam, the first part of the chapter talks about Srivaikuntam. The temple is also described in Vaikunta Mahatmeeyam, which is part of Tamrabarani Sthalapurana, written in palm manuscripts.

The Sthalapurana states that Lord Brahma, upon getting defeated by Somakasura, lost the four Vedas. He did a severe penance on the banks of the River Tamaraibarani towards attaining a boon from Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu was pleased with Brahma’s devotion and granted Brahma a boon of defeating Somakasura and retrieving the four Vedas. Then he took the form of a Fish, “Matsya Avatar”, and killed Somakasura, thereby reestablishing the four Vedas with Brahma. Lord Brahma asked Lord Vishnu to set the place as his abode, named Srivaikuntam, and his form as Vaikuntanathar.

Such is the rich heritage of Srivaikuntam, where Garuda Seva Utsavam is celebrated in the month of Vaisakha (May-June) by leading 9 idols of Navatirupati adorned on 9 Garuda vahanas. Nammalvar's idol is adorned on an Anna Vahana, and his pasurams dedicated to the Navatirupathi are recited. The temple follows the Tenkalai traditions of the Vaishnav sect, where pooja is conducted four times a day- morning, 8:00 am, afternoon, noon, evening, 6:00 pm and night, 8:00 pm.
