Varalakshmi Vratam: Significance, Puja Rituals and Why We Celebrate It

Varalakshmi Vratam is one of the most celebrated Hindu festivals in honour of Goddess Lakshmi – the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Varalakshmi Vratam is mainly celebrated in Southern India including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and parts of Maharashtra. In Hindu traditions, the word Varalakshmi can be interpreted as Vara (meaning blessing) and Lakshmi (representing Goddess Lakshmi). Why Do We Celebrate Varalakshmi Vratam?

As explained earlier, the main reason for celebrating Varalakshmi Vratam is to seek the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. She is considered the embodiment of prosperity and abundance. The worship is mainly done by women with prayers for the well-being of their husband, children, and other family members. Varalakshmi Vratam is very significant for married women in many communities of Southern India although anyone can observe the vrat.

Goddess Varalakshmi is considered a manifestation of Mahalakshmi, and the worship of the Goddess is associated with seeking the blessings of the eight forms of Lakshmi, known as Ashtalakshmi. Varalakshmi Vratam Puja Preparations

The preparations are mainly done a day before the actual puja. The house is thoroughly cleaned, especially the place where the puja is going to be done. Rangoli or kolam, flowers and traditional items decorate the small space that will be used for puja. Many families also prepare a wooden plank or platform for the kalash and Goddess Varalakshmi.

Kalash is prepared using water, rice, betel leaves and other traditional items. A coconut is kept on the kalash and decorated as per family customs. In some houses, the kalash is beautifully dressed and decorated to represent Goddess Varalakshmi. Many people also use Lakshmi face or any idol of the Goddess as per the family traditions.

Flowers, fruits, turmeric, kumkum, betel leaves, betel nuts, sweets and other offering items are kept ready for the puja. The sacred thread, commonly known as Dorak, is also included in some of the traditions. There are many variations in the offerings and exact customs, therefore it is fine to follow the family traditions.

How Is Varalakshmi Vratam Celebrated?

In the morning of the festival, devotees usually get up early and take a shower. Then the puja area is cleaned and decorated and the worship begins. Many women prefer wearing sarees and traditional jewellery for the occasion. The Goddess is invited into the house with prayers and devotional songs.

Then Goddess Varalakshmi is worshipped with flowers, turmeric, kumkum, fruits, sweets and other offerings. Devotees recite Lakshmi mantras and listen to or read the Varalakshmi Vrat Katha. This story connected with the vrat is an important part of the festival since it tells the importance of devotion and faith in God. A sacred thread is also put on as part of the traditional ritual.

Then after the worship, the family receives the blessings of the Goddess and prasad is shared. In many South Indian households, special food items are prepared and offered to the Goddess first and then served to everyone. Many families also invite married women for a traditional gathering and offer them turmeric, kumkum, fruits, sweets and other offerings.
