Independence Day: Celebrating India's Freedom and Unity
Every year, India celebrates its Independence Day on 15th August with pride and joy. It is considered one of the main national holidays of our country since it is associated with gaining independence from British rule in 1947. This holiday reminds us of the courage and sacrifice of hundreds of freedom fighters who contributed to the independence of India and wanted to see India as a free and strong country.
It is not just another public holiday. It is a day of people coming together regardless of their religion, language, etc. All schools, colleges, offices and government departments are decorated with the Indian tricolour. People sing the national anthem, attend different cultural programs and recall their heroes.
Though many decades have passed since gaining the independence, this holiday inspires all generations to do good deeds. It makes us realize that with the freedom comes the responsibility and everybody should contribute to making India better through honesty, kindness, hard work and respect.
History of India's Independence
India was ruled by Britain for almost two hundred years. Many Indians experienced injustices, high taxes and loss of rights. Eventually, brave leaders and common people united their efforts and began fighting for freedom. They wanted India to be able to manage itself and provide its citizens with equal opportunities.
There were many freedom fighters who contributed to gaining the independence. Mahatma Gandhi inspired people through his nonviolence and peaceful protests. Leaders such as Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rani Lakshmibai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and others did an enormous job and some even lost their lives or spent years in jail for the sake of their country.
Eventually, India gained its independence and on 15th August 1947 Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of India and delivered his famous speech "Tryst with Destiny". Every Independence Day reminds us about the struggle and sacrifice made for the sake of freedom.
Independence Day Celebration in India
The largest Independence Day celebration is held in the Red Fort in Delhi. The Prime Minister hoists the national flag, addresses the nation and pays tribute to the freedom fighters. The ceremony includes the national anthem, guard of honor and cultural performances that show rich heritage of India.
Also, every school and college organizes different programs including flag hoisting ceremony, patriotic songs, dance performances, speeches, competitions and other. Children often dress up as national leaders, perform plays and learn the history of India's struggle for independence.
Families also celebrate this day in their way. People proudly decorate the Indian flag at home, watch Independence Day celebrations on TV and discuss the history of the country with children. Different social organizations hold tree plantation drives, blood donation camps, community service and other similar activities.
Why Independence Day is Important Today
Freedom is one of the main gifts that any nation can have. This day reminds us that this gift was gained after the long struggle and sacrifice. In addition, the protection of national values is the responsibility of each citizen.
India has already made tremendous achievements in different spheres: science, technology, education, sport, economy and many others. Nevertheless, the country still faces some challenges: pollution, corruption, poverty, social inequalities and others. Independence Day motivates all citizens to work together to solve these issues and make India stronger for future generations.
Being patriot does not only mean celebrating Independence Day. It is about following laws, respecting the symbols of the country, being helpful, protecting the environment and making positive contribution into the life of society. Simple actions of each responsible citizen can bring great benefits to the country.
The Spirit of Unity and Patriotism
India is a diverse country where people from different states, cultures, languages and religions live together in one union. Independence Day reflects the spirit of unity of Indians very well. On this day, everybody equally proudly waves the tricolor and equally loves the national anthem.
The Indian flag symbolizes courage, peace, truth and progress. Each color has its own meaning reminding us about the responsibility of every citizen. The Ashoka Chakra in the center of the flag symbolizes progress and constant movement towards the bright future of India.
Patriotism does not mean only speaking about it but also showing it through your actions. Respect for people around you, care about cleanliness of our surroundings, support of local communities and sincerity of your work are the signs of patriotism.
