• About the author:

Swami Satyananda Saraswati was born in 1923 in Almora, Uttaranchal, India, in a family that traditionally worked in farming and served as warriors. From a young age, he felt a deep sense of spiritual awareness and had amazing mystical encounters that led him toward a spiritual life. When he turned 20, he gave up worldly life to search for a spiritual teacher.

In 1943, he encountered his teacher, Swami Sivananda Saraswati, in Rishikesh. In 1947, he became a part of the Dashnami Order of Sannyasa by the Ganges River, receiving the new name Swami Satyananda Saraswati. For the next twelve years, he dedicated himself to intense yoga training and helping at the ashram, where he discovered the deep truths of spiritual living and learned about the complete yoga system that includes Karma, Bhakti, Jnana, and Raja yogas.

Swami Satyananda is well-known for combining old tantric yoga techniques with modern yoga practices. He focused on how to expand awareness and release energy. He traveled a lot around South Asia, meeting saints, yogis, and people interested in spirituality. He also developed ways to make traditional yoga and Tantra easier and more useful for people today.

In 1963, he created the Bihar School of Yoga, which gained international fame for sharing the teachings of complete yoga. Later in his life, he stepped back from managing and chose to concentrate on higher spiritual practices. He set up the Rikhia Ashram, where he lived as a paramahamsa, which means he was a very high-level renouncer, and he spent time doing intense spiritual work.

Throughout his life, Swami Satyananda Saraswati taught that reaching enlightenment involves a combined approach to yoga and meditation. He highlighted the need to expand awareness and to live according to spiritual values. He passed away in 2009, leaving behind a rich legacy of teachings, schools, and writings that still inspire spiritual seekers all over the world.
