After Lord Brahma created the cosmic universe, he realized that it lacked forms, concepts, and orders. He searched for help organizing the Universe since he felt lost. To aid him in this task, he chose to create the exact personification of knowledge, and Goddess Saraswati came out of his mouth. She instructed him on how to establish order in the universe as we know it. The birth of the Sun, Moon, and Stars occurred. Seasons shifted and oceans appeared. The mesmerized Gandharvas begged for the music, and Goddess Saraswati promised to teach it to them in exchange for the Soma plant. Thus, the Gandharvas learnt music to become celestial musicians whose melodies could awaken the mind like no other intoxicant, and the gods reclaimed their Soma plant.
