The Story of Ramanujacharya – The Man Who Shared the Sacred Mantra
Sri Ramanujacharya was born in the 11th century in Sriperumbudur and became one of the most influential teachers of the Sri Vaishnava tradition. From a young age, he showed exceptional interest in spiritual knowledge and the teachings of the Vedas. One of the most famous episodes associated with his life concerns the sacred Ashtakshara mantra, “Om Namo Narayanaya.”
Ramanuja received the sacred mantra from his teacher Tirukoshtiyur Nambi after repeatedly approaching him for instruction. The teacher instructed him that the mantra was extremely sacred and should not be revealed casually. According to the traditional account, Ramanuja was warned that revealing it without permission could result in severe spiritual consequences. Ramanuja agreed to the instruction. But soon after receiving the mantra, he climbed to a high place where people could hear him and called out to the devotees. “Come and listen! I will share the sacred name that can lead the soul toward liberation.” The people gathered around him, surprised by his announcement.
When his teacher learned what had happened, he questioned Ramanuja: “Why did you reveal what I instructed you to keep secret? Do you not fear the consequences?” Ramanuja humbly replied that if sharing the sacred mantra could help countless people move toward liberation, he was willing to bear the consequences himself. His answer reflected one of the central qualities remembered in his tradition: compassion for all living beings.
Ramanujacharya went on to establish and strengthen the Vishishtadvaita philosophical tradition, emphasizing devotion to the Supreme Lord while explaining the relationship between God, individual souls, and the universe. He travelled widely, taught disciples, wrote important philosophical works, and played a significant role in organizing temple worship traditions.
His life continues to inspire devotees because scholarship and devotion were never separate in his teachings. Knowledge, according to his tradition, should ultimately lead to surrender, service, and love for the Divine.
A ramanujar statue therefore represents more than a spiritual teacher; it serves as a reminder of compassion, devotion, disciplined learning, and sharing divine knowledge with others. This Ramanujan Murti can inspire devotees to approach spiritual learning with humility and use knowledge for the benefit of others.
