The Story of Ram Darbar – When Rama Chose Dharma Over the Throne

The story of Shri Rama's life in the Ramayana begins with a difficult choice.

Rama, the beloved prince of Ayodhya, was preparing to be crowned king when Queen Kaikeyi reminded King Dasharatha of two promises he had once granted her. She asked that her son Bharata receive the throne and that Rama spend fourteen years in exile.

Heartbroken, Dasharatha struggled to accept the demand. When Rama learned about it, he remained calm. “Father's promise must be protected. I will go to the forest,” Rama declared, choosing dharma over royal comfort. Goddess Sita refused to remain in Ayodhya without Him. “Where you are, Rama, there is my home,” she told Him. Lakshmana also insisted on accompanying his brother, saying that he would remain by Rama's side and serve Him throughout the exile.

The three entered the forest together, where their journey eventually led to the abduction of Sita by Ravana. Rama then met Hanuman and Sugriva in Kishkindha. Recognizing Rama's divine character, Hanuman devoted himself completely to His service. When Rama asked Hanuman to help find Sita, Hanuman crossed the ocean to Lanka, discovered her in the Ashoka grove, and carried Rama's message of hope to her. With the help of the Vanara army, Rama eventually reached Lanka and defeated Ravana, restoring Sita and protecting dharma.

After fourteen years, Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana returned to Ayodhya. Their return marked the restoration of righteousness and the beginning of Rama's celebrated reign.

The Ram Darbar represents this divine family and their individual virtues: Rama represents righteousness and ideal leadership, Sita represents devotion and strength, Lakshmana represents loyalty and service, and Hanuman represents complete surrender and devotion. This is why a ram darbar brass idol is traditionally cherished as more than a decorative representation. It symbolizes the values that make a household strong—truth, loyalty, sacrifice, courage, devotion, and respect for duty.

Worshipping a ram darbar murti is traditionally associated with family harmony, courage, devotion, and righteous living. This sacred ram darbar idol reminds devotees that difficult choices can be faced with integrity, while a ram darbar statue brings the inspiring story of Rama's family and His commitment to dharma into the home.
