• Story about the author Lakshmi:

   • Lakshmi, who was originally named S. Thiripurasundari, was born on March 21, 1921, in Thottiyam, Tamil Nadu. She became a doctor by training at Stanley Medical College and later worked in Chennai. While she was still a student, she started writing short stories under the name ""Lakshmi"" for a magazine called Ananda Vikatan, with her first story, “Thagunda thandanaya? ” (An apt punishment? ) published in March 1940.

   • In 1955, she got married to Dr. Kannabiran and moved to South Africa, where she spent 22 years. After her husband's death in 1966, she came back to India in 1977 and devoted the rest of her life to writing until she passed away on January 7, 1987, at the age of 65.

   • Lakshmi was a very productive writer, creating over 1,000 short stories and more than 150 novels, many of which focused on family life and women's stories. Some of her most famous works are Bhavani, Penn Manam, Mithila Vilas, Kanchanaiyin Kanavu, and Oru Kaveriyai Pola, the last of which won her the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1984.

   • People appreciate her writing style because it has a lot of emotional depth, authenticity, and strong female characters. The main characters in her stories are often both vulnerable and proud, facing personal and social problems with quiet strength. Lakshmi found a unique voice in Tamil literature by discussing themes like justice, communication, and personal identity, often with a feminist perspective.

   • One of her notable works, Oru Kaveriyai Pola, tells the story of a Tamil woman from South Africa visiting India. It received a lot of praise for realistically showing Tamil identity in a global context and for its rich storytelling and deep psychological insight. It's regarded as one of the most important contemporary Tamil novels.

   • Lakshmi is remembered as one of the most cherished female writers in modern Tamil literature. Her stories reflect cultural authenticity, deep emotions, and a strong belief in justice and dignity. Oru Kaveriyai Pola stands out as an example of her ability to tell stories that connect different worlds—linking South Africa and India, tradition and modern life, as well as pain and hope.
