The Sacred Story of Lord Murugan and His Divine Peacock

According to the Skanda Purana, the demon Surapadman performed severe penance and obtained extraordinary powers. Filled with pride, he began troubling the Devas and disturbed peace throughout the three worlds. Unable to withstand his tyranny, the gods sought the blessings of Lord Shiva.

From the blazing third eye of Lord Shiva emerged six divine sparks of light. Agni, the Fire God, and Vayu, the Wind God, carried these sparks to the sacred lake Saravana Poigai, where they transformed into six radiant infants. The six babies were lovingly nurtured by the six Krittika maidens. When Goddess Parvati embraced them, the six infants united into one glorious child with six faces—Lord Murugan, also known as Shanmukha, Kartikeya, and Subrahmanya.
