The famous novel 'Kallikkatu Ithikasaam' written by poet Vairamuthu won the 'Sahitya Akademi' award for the year 2003. The 'Kallikattu legend' accounts the life of the 14 villages that were vacated when the Vaigai Dam in today's Theni district was built to make way for its reservoir. Among the 14 drowned towns, Mettur is the birthplace of poet Vairamuthu.
