Adi Shankara is considered a great scholar in modern Advaita Vedanta and is credited with approximately 300 texts, including poetry, original philosophical expositions, and commentaries. The book ‘Jagath Guru Adi Sankarar Vazhmum Vakkum’ by C S Devanathan, explores the saint’s works which assert that attaining the proper knowledge of Atman-Brahman and jivatman leads to the realization of Brahman, immortality, and escape from the sorrowful cycle of reincarnation.

Shankara recognizes the Vedas and Upanishads as sources of knowledge as he formulates his philosophical theories. However, he never bases his argument just on these antiquated texts; rather, he backs up each claim point by point with logic and experience. According to Nakamura, Shankara was not an original thinker but rather an organizer of the writings of prior intellectuals. Shankara's writings are primarily concerned with the liberating realization of the Self and Brahman's identity.
