The Divine Story of Sudarshana Chakra – How the Lord Protected King Ambarisha
According to a traditional Vaishnava account, the story of Sudarshana Chakra is beautifully connected with King Ambarisha, a deeply devoted follower of Lord Vishnu. Ambarisha was a righteous king who ruled his kingdom while remaining firmly devoted to spiritual practices, charity, prayer, and service. Although he possessed great wealth and royal authority, Ambarisha remained humble and dedicated his life to the worship of Lord Vishnu. He observed sacred vows and regularly performed devotional practices with sincerity.
One year, King Ambarisha undertook an important Ekadashi vrata. Ekadashi is traditionally observed as a sacred day of fasting and devotion to Lord Vishnu. Ambarisha observed the vow with great discipline and devotion.
At the completion of the vrata, he prepared to conclude the fast at the appropriate time. At that moment, the powerful sage Durvasa arrived at the palace with his disciples. Ambarisha respectfully welcomed the sage and requested him to accept a meal.
Durvasa agreed but went to the river to perform his customary rituals before returning. As the prescribed time for Ambarisha to complete his Ekadashi observance approached, the king faced a difficult situation. He wished to honour the sacred timing of the vow while also respecting his guest. After consulting learned people, Ambarisha took a small amount of water to formally complete the fast. He then waited respectfully for Durvasa to return.
When Durvasa came back and learned that Ambarisha had taken water before he had eaten, the sage became extremely angry. In his fury, he created a terrifying being from a strand of his hair and commanded it to attack the king. Ambarisha remained calm and continued to place his faith in Lord Vishnu.
At that moment, the Sudarshana Chakra appeared to protect the devoted king. The radiant divine discus destroyed the threatening being and then turned toward Durvasa. The sage immediately understood the immense power of the divine Chakra and began fleeing for protection. He travelled to different divine realms seeking refuge, approaching Brahma, Shiva, and other powerful beings. Yet none could stop the Sudarshana Chakra because it had been released by Lord Vishnu himself.
Finally, Durvasa approached Lord Vishnu and pleaded for protection. Lord Vishnu explained that he was deeply devoted to his devotees and that the sage should seek forgiveness from Ambarisha himself.
Durvasa returned to King Ambarisha and asked for his forgiveness. The compassionate king prayed sincerely for the Sudarshana Chakra to withdraw its power and spare the sage. The divine Chakra then ceased its pursuit, and peace was restored.
This traditional story highlights the extraordinary devotion of Ambarisha and the protective power of Lord Vishnu's divine discus. It also teaches that true devotion is accompanied by humility, patience, forgiveness, and respect.
The sudarshan chakra is therefore revered not merely as a weapon but as a divine force representing the protection of dharma and the destruction of forces that disturb righteousness. Chakrathazhwar is worshipped as the sacred personification of this powerful divine principle.
Keeping this chakrathazhwar in a pooja space can serve as a reminder of faith, protection, discipline, and the strength that comes from following the path of righteousness. The sacred form also reflects the traditional belief that sincere devotion and humility receive divine protection.
