The story of Gautama Buddha
In 623 BC, Gautama Buddha was born in the Southern Nepalese province of Lumbini. He was born into a Shakya Clan noble family that lived in the foothills of the Himalayas. His mother, Maya, was a Koliyan princess, while his father, Suddhodana, was the leader of the Shakya tribe. According to stories, the court astrologers foretold that he would grow up to be a great ruler or a sage.
Gautama was raised in every luxury imaginable by his father, who protected him from the outside world and human misery, fearing that the latter might happen. He finally saw the outside world after 29 years of leading a protected and privileged lifestyle.
Buddha discovered a corpse, an elderly man, and a sick man in the streets of Kapilavastu. He was told by his charioteer that all living things eventually age, become ill, and die. This made it impossible for Buddha to sleep. On his way back, he noticed a nomadic monk strolling along the street. After realizing that he could become a monk and stop all of this misery, he decided to leave his kingdom in pursuit of solutions to the problems associated with suffering.
Wearing a modest robe, Buddha silently said goodbye to his wife and set off for the jungle in quest of solutions to the issues of suffering. There, he met Udraka Ramaputra and Alara Kalama. He learned how to train his mind to enter the sphere of nothingness from Alara Kalama. He learned from Udraka Ramaputra how to enter the concentration zone of the mind, which lies between consciousness and oblivion. Buddha eventually abandoned both of his gurus in pursuit of freedom.
Buddha spent six years practicing extreme self-control, refraining from all pleasures, eating only one grain of rice, and battling his body and mind. He pondered while sitting beneath the bodhi tree after taking a bath in the Nairanjana river. Seven days later, he was freed from the bonds of human misery and became the enlightened "Buddha".
