The Sacred Story of Goddess Andal – The Beloved Bride of Lord Ranganatha
Goddess Andal, lovingly known as Goda Devi, was born in the sacred town of Srivilliputhur in Tamil Nadu. According to the Divya Prabandham and Vaishnava tradition, she was discovered as a divine infant beneath a sacred Tulasi plant by the saint Periyalvar (Vishnuchitta). Believing her to be a gift from Lord Vishnu Himself, he lovingly raised her with devotion and care.
As Andal grew, her heart became completely immersed in the worship of Lord Vishnu. Every day, Periyalvar prepared beautiful flower garlands to adorn the deity. Out of innocent devotion, young Andal would first wear the garlands herself, imagining that she was offering herself to the Lord before presenting them at the temple.
One day, Periyalvar noticed this and was saddened, believing the garlands had become unsuitable for worship. However, Lord Ranganatha appeared in his dream and declared that He preferred only the garlands worn by Andal because they carried the fragrance of her pure devotion. From then onward, she became celebrated as "Soodi Kodutha Sudarkodi"—the divine maiden who first wore the garland before offering it to the Lord.
Andal later composed the immortal Tiruppavai, thirty devotional hymns recited during the sacred month of Margazhi, inspiring countless devotees to seek the grace of Lord Narayana through devotion, humility, and selfless love. She also composed Nachiyar Tirumozhi, expressing her deep longing to unite with Lord Ranganatha.
According to tradition, Andal eventually reached Srirangam, where she merged eternally with Lord Ranganatha, symbolizing the ultimate union between the devoted soul and the Supreme Lord.
Worshipping a sacred andal vigraham is believed to bless devotees with devotion, harmonious relationships, prosperity, and spiritual fulfillment. The divine presence of this andal statue inspires unwavering faith, while keeping an andal idol at home is considered auspicious for those seeking happy marriages, family harmony, and the blessings of Lord Vishnu. This beautifully crafted goda devi vigraham serves as a timeless reminder that sincere devotion is the highest offering to God.
