The Divine Story of Goddess Andal – The Devotee Who Became One with the Divine
Goddess Andal is traditionally revered as the divine incarnation of Goddess Bhudevi and is one of the most celebrated figures in the Sri Vaishnava tradition. Her story is closely connected with Srivilliputhur in Tamil Nadu and her profound devotion to Lord Ranganatha.
According to the traditional account, Periyalvar, a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, discovered a baby girl beneath a Tulasi plant in the temple garden at Srivilliputhur. He lovingly accepted the child as a divine gift and named her Kothai, who later became known as Andal. From childhood, Andal's heart was completely devoted to Lord Vishnu. She grew up listening to her father speak about the greatness of the Lord and developed an intense desire to offer herself entirely to Him.
Periyalvar prepared garlands every day for offering to the deity. Before taking them to the temple, Andal would secretly wear the garland herself and look at her reflection, wondering whether the garland would be beautiful enough for her beloved Lord. When her father discovered this, he was distressed because the garlands had been worn before being offered. He prepared a fresh garland and offered it to the Lord instead. Traditionally, it is said that Lord Vishnu appeared in Periyalvar's dream and revealed that He preferred the garlands that Andal had worn. This led to her being lovingly remembered as "Soodi Kodutha Sudarkodi"—the radiant woman who offered garlands after wearing them.
Andal's devotion continued to grow. She composed the "Tiruppavai", a collection of thirty devotional verses traditionally sung during the Tamil month of Margazhi. Through these verses, she expressed deep love and surrender toward Lord Vishnu. She also composed "Nachiyar Tirumozhi", another important work expressing her longing for union with the Divine.
According to the traditional account, Andal ultimately married Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam. When she reached the temple, she entered the sanctum and is traditionally believed to have united with the Lord. Her story is therefore remembered not simply as that of a devotee, but as an extraordinary example of complete surrender and divine love. Andal's devotion continues to inspire generations of devotees, particularly through the daily recitation of Tiruppavai during Margazhi.
This andal vigraham brings that sacred devotional tradition into the home. Her presence can remind devotees of sincerity in prayer, unwavering faith, humility, and the power of pure devotion.
