Varalakshmi Vratam: The Complete Guide to Puja, Benifites, and Traditions
Varalakshmi Vratam is one of the most significant festivals dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu deity of wealth, fortune, and prosperity. Observed primarily by married women in South India (Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu), this Vratam (holy vow) is performed to seek the blessings of the Goddess for the well-being of their husbands and families.
Varalakshmi Vratam
The name is derived from Vara (boon) and Lakshmi (Goddess of Wealth). Thus, it is the worship of the "Boon-Granting Lakshmi." It falls on the Friday immediately preceding the Full Moon day (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Shravana (AugustβSeptember). Unlike many other festivals, it is not a public holiday but a deeply personal, domestic ritual.
Celebration of Varalakshmi Vratam
The festival celebrates the power of the divine feminine. It is believed that worshipping Goddess Lakshmi on this day is equivalent to worshipping the Ashtalakshmi, the eight forms of Lakshmi representing Wealth, Earth, Learning, Love, Fame, Peace, Pleasure, and Strength. It is a day to express gratitude for current prosperity and pray for continued domestic harmony.
The Story (Legend) of Varalakshmi Vratam
The origin of this Vratam is found in the Skanda Purana. Lord Shiva narrates the story to Goddess Parvati about a woman named Charumathi.
Charumathi lived in the town of Kundina and was a devoted wife and daughter-in-law. Impressed by her piety, Goddess Lakshmi appeared in her dream and instructed her to perform the Varalakshmi Vratam on the Friday of the Shravana month. Charumathi shared the dream with her family, and together with other women in the village, she performed the puja exactly as instructed.
As they completed the ritual, the women were miraculously adorned with gold ornaments, and their houses filled with riches. Since then, the tradition has been passed down through generations.
Puja Needs & Procedure
To perform the Varalakshmi Vratam, you first need to gather the essential items (Samagri). This includes an idol or image of Goddess Lakshmi, a metal Kalash (pot), mango leaves, lotus flowers, and a coconut. You will also need sandalwood paste, kumkum, and a small new saree to drape the Kalash. Prepare a Toram, a sacred yellow thread with nine knots and cook traditional offerings like Puran Poli, vada, and payasam.
The Puja Procedure begins with cleaning your home and drawing a beautiful Rangoli at the entrance to welcome the Goddess. For the Kalash Sthapana, fill the pot with rice, water, and coins. Place the mango leaves around the neck and the coconut on top to represent the deity. Often, a silver or clay face of the Goddess is tied to the coconut.
Start the ritual by praying to Lord Ganesha to ensure a smooth ceremony. Then, invoke Goddess Lakshmi into the Kalash with devotion. Tie the Toram on your right wrist; this symbolizes the sacred bond and her protection. Offer the prepared food (Naivedyam) and perform a soulful Aarti. In the evening, the tradition of sharing is key. Invite married women (Sumangalis) to your home and offer them Tamboolam a gift of betel leaves, fruits, turmeric, and kumkum to share the blessings of prosperity and happiness with everyone.
Varalakshmi Vratam Mantra
The most common mantra chanted during the puja is:
"Lakshmim Ksheerasamudra Raja Thanayam Sriranga Dhamaswaroopiniam
Pratyaksha Mangala Pradayinim Dhana Dhanya Samruddhim Dehi Me Swaha"
