Tamil poet Tirumular wrote the Tirumantiram, also known as Thirumantiram, somewhere between the sixth and the tenth century CE. It is the first known Tamil book to utilize the phrase, and the tenth of the twelve volumes of the Tirumurai, the foundational scriptures of Shaiva Siddhanta. The oldest known Tamil presentation of the Shaiva Agamas is found in the Tirumantiram. It has more than three thousand lines that discuss many facets of spirituality, morality, and adoration of Shiva. However, it is more spiritual than religious, and Tirumular's interpretation of the Mahavakyas makes the distinctions between Siddhanta and Vedanta clear. Historian Venkatraman claims that the text encompasses nearly all aspects of Tamil Siddhar. Another historian, Madhavan, claims that the text focuses on the principles of Siddha medicine and its therapeutic abilities. Numerous topics are covered, such as astronomy and physical culture.
