In Hindu mythology, Vishvakarman is the gods' architect. Vishvakarman is the divine carpenter and master craftsman who constructed the gods' cities and chariots as well as their weapons. He is credited with creating the magnificent figure of Jagannatha in Puri (Orissa) and designing the legendary city of Lanka. He is the patron deity of laborers, craftspeople, and artists and is credited with bringing the subjects of architecture and mechanics to humanity. All of the devas' weapons, including the god Indra's Vajra, were made by Vishvakarma.
According to the Puranas, Vishvakarma created the Sudarshana Chakra, and there is a story about how it came to be: Vishvakarma's daughter, Sanjña, was wed to the sun god, Surya. But she was unable to reach him because of the heat and burning light of her partner. As soon as she told her father this, Vishvakarma made the sun dimmer so that his daughter could be with him.
Three celestial objects—the Pushpaka Vimana, the Trishula of Shiva, and the Sudarshana Chakra of Vishnu—were created by Vishvakarma from the radiance of the sun.
According to the epic Ramayana, the vanara (monkey) Nala was the son of Vishvakarma, created to aid Lord Ram in the great battle against Ravana.
Golu is celebrated during Navaratri to honor the divine feminine energy and showcase the rich traditions of storytelling through beautifully arranged kolu dolls. Deities, saints, and legendary golu figures are arranged in levels to represent the cosmic order and the journey from spiritual ignorance to enlightenment. Additionally, this festival is a time for devotional singing, cultural performances, and social gatherings. Families invite guests to view their Golu bommai display, exchange gifts, and share prasad, fostering community and devotion. Future generations can inherit customs, values, and stories by participating in Golu celebrations.
