Lord Vitthal or Panduranga, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is closely associated with the story of Pundalik, a devotee. Pundalik, traveling to Kashi, stayed at the ashram of Sage Kukkut, whom he mocked for not knowing the way to Kashi. That night, Pundalik witnessed Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati, the holy rivers, cleaning the ashram. They revealed that Sage Kukkut earned their devotion by dutifully serving his parents, showing that piety comes from fulfilling responsibilities, not visiting holy places.
Realizing his mistake, Pundalik rushed home, cared for his parents, and later took them to Kashi. Impressed by his transformation, Lord Krishna decided to test him. When Krishna visited Pundalik's home, Pundalik was busy attending to his parents. Recognizing his duty as paramount, Pundalik gave Krishna a brick to stand on and asked Him to wait. Krishna, moved by Pundalik's devotion, patiently stood on the brick.
When Pundalik finished his duties, he apologized, and Krishna offered him a boon. Pundalik humbly asked Krishna to stay on Earth and bless devotees. Krishna agreed, manifesting as Pandurangan, the Lord standing on a brick, symbolizing devotion and duty.
