• The story opens with Idhayakumaran, a man from Chola, being denied entry to Vanchi, the Chera capital. He boldly charges in anyway and discovers a stunning ivory statue in the city's woods.
• As he picks it up, Princess Ranjani accuses him of theft and orders his capture. Idhayakumaran escapes with the princess as a hostage, promising to reveal a secret about her birth at the royal jeweler's.
•At the jeweler's, Ranjani meets a stranger named Vijayalayan, who is introduced as her father. He renames her Kannazhagi and declares himself the new ruler of Vanchi. Idhayakumaran arrives with the statue, which Vijayalayan identifies as the work of a famous Chola king.
