The fish form of Vishnu, along with the other nine deities Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Bharagava Parshurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha, and Kalki, is what gives the Matsya Purana its name. Although Matsya speaks for himself in a few of the chapters, the Matsya Purana covers a wide range of topics in addition to being primarily based on Matsya's life experience. The Matsya Purana is divided into 291 chapters.

In the first place, it recounts the Manusamvada dialogues between Manu and the Lord. It then addresses the following topics in the following order: Brahmanda's history; Brahma's explanation of the Shariraka Sankhya; the origin of Devas and Asuras; the origin of Maruts; the observance of Madanadvadashi Vrata; the ways of worshiping the Lokapalas; Manvantaras' description; the history of King Vena; the birth of Sun and Vaivasvata; and the meeting with Budha.

After that, it discusses the Manes families, the Shraddha rituals, Pitritirtha Pravasa, the moon's birth, Yavati's history, the splendor of Svamikartika, and other topics. Next, it talks about different laws, the splendor of different rivers and tirthas, the sun, moon, and their relative positions moving across the ocean, the churning of the ocean, worshiping the Devas, the features of palaces, pandals, and house construction, the shape of temples, the description of gifts, the names of Kalpas, and so on.

The current edition of the Matsya Purana is a comprehensive two-volume work that contains the entire text in Sanskrit, an extensive Introduction, an English translation with notes, and a comprehensive Index of Verses.
