One of the most profound stories from the Shiva Purana reveals why the sacred Lingam is revered as the highest symbol of the Absolute.

Long ago, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu entered into a debate over who was supreme. Brahma, as the creator, believed he was the origin of all existence. Vishnu, as the sustainer, believed that preservation was the greatest power. At that moment, an immense pillar of fire appeared before them. It stretched infinitely upward beyond the heavens and downward beyond the worlds below. Neither its beginning nor its end could be seen. This boundless column of light was Lord Shiva Himself manifesting as the eternal shivling.

To discover its limits, Lord Vishnu took the form of Varaha and traveled downward in search of the base. Lord Brahma transformed into a swan and flew upward to find the summit. Despite their efforts, neither could find the end of the radiant shivalingam. Vishnu returned and humbly accepted the truth. Brahma falsely claimed success. Lord Shiva then emerged from the pillar and revealed that He alone was the infinite reality beyond time, space, and form. He blessed Vishnu for his honesty and taught Brahma the importance of humility.
