The Legend of Durga: The Slayer of Mahishasura
The demon Mahishasura received a boon from Brahma, making him invincible to any man or god. Empowered by this boon, Mahishasura began wreaking havoc across the three worlds, defeating the gods and threatening to destroy creation itself. Desperate for help, the gods approached Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, who, along with the other deities, combined their energies to create a divine warrior – Goddess Durga. Born from the collective energy of the gods, Durga shone with unmatched radiance. The gods bestowed her with powerful weapons: Shiva’s trident, Vishnu’s discus, Agni’s spear, and Varuna’s noose, among others. Mounted on her lion, she rode into battle, facing Mahishasura and his demon army. The battle raged for nine days and nights, during which Durga displayed incredible strength and strategy. On the tenth day, she vanquished Mahishasura, slaying him with her trident as he tried to deceive her by shape-shifting. This glorious victory is celebrated as Navaratri, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.
