Lord Dhanvantari's Origin Story

According to legend, the gods and demons churned the ocean of milk (Kshira Sagara) to obtain Amrita, the nectar of immortality. Eventually, Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the ocean, carrying the sacred nectar in his hands. He is often depicted holding a pot of Amrit in one hand and a conch in another, while his third hand holds a book of Ayurveda, and his fourth carries medicinal herbs.

The essence of Ayurvedic teachings lies in the divine balance of mind, body, and soul, making Lord Dhanvantari’s role extend beyond physical well-being. His teachings emphasize the use of herbs, remedies, and surgical knowledge to achieve optimal health. Ayurvedic practitioners often seek Lord Dhanvantari’s blessings before beginning their work, believing that his divine grace sanctifies medicinal plants and healing treatments.

Acharya Sushruta’s ancient Ayurvedic text, the Sushruta Samhita, provides detailed insights into surgical practices. It is believed that Divodasa, the king of Kashi, was an earthly incarnation of Lord Dhanvantari. As a master surgeon, Divodasa Dhanvantari passed down his knowledge of Ayurveda and surgery to Acharya Sushruta, covering areas such as anatomy, surgical instruments, and advanced procedures like rhinoplasty, open-heart surgery, brain surgery, and cataract removal.
