The Divine Story of Bala Andal – The Child Who Loved Vishnu
Long ago in Srivilliputhur, Periyalvar, a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, found a baby girl beneath a Tulasi plant in his garden. Believing her to be a divine blessing, he raised her lovingly and named her Kodhai. From childhood, Kodhai showed extraordinary devotion to Lord Vishnu. Unlike other children who played ordinary games, Bala Andal would gather flowers, sing songs of the Lord, and dream only of him.

As she grew, she began wearing the flower garlands meant for the deity, imagining herself as Vishnu’s bride. When her father discovered this, he felt the garlands had become unfit for worship. But Lord Vishnu appeared in his dream and declared that he preferred only the garlands worn by Kodhai, because they carried the fragrance of pure devotion. That child Kodhai became Andal—the saint who would later compose the immortal Tiruppavai and unite eternally with Lord Ranganatha. This sacred golu bommai preserves the earliest stage of her divine journey—the innocence before transcendence.

History of Golu – The True Traditional Legacy
The tradition of Golu began in ancient Devi worship practices, where sacred figurines represented the cosmic order and divine stories. During the Chola period, temple artisans created clay idols to narrate the stories of gods, saints, and epics, which became the roots of the kolu bommai tradition.

The Vijayanagara Empire formalized Golu during Navaratri, transforming it into a grand celebration of devotion and storytelling. Later, the Nayakas and Marathas brought this tradition into homes, preserving mythology, temple heritage, and saintly stories through dassara dolls. Saints like Andal became essential in Golu because they represented human devotion rising to divine union.

Today, every golu doll continues this sacred legacy, carrying stories of faith, poetry, and spiritual wisdom across generations.
