A legend says that Shiva once commented that everything in the world, including food, is Maya (illusion). Furious, the goddess of food, Parvati, decided to show how important food is by causing all of the food on Earth to vanish. Hunger began to affect the earth. When Shiva finally realized how important food was, he begged Parvati for it at her door. After becoming joyful, Parvati prepared a kitchen (temple) for her followers in Varanasi and served Shiva meals prepared by hand. This temple came to be known as Annapurna Devi Mandir.
