The Divine Story of Goddess Andal – The Devotee Who Offered Her Heart to Lord Vishnu

Goddess Andal is traditionally revered as a divine incarnation of Goddess Bhudevi and holds a special place in the Sri Vaishnava tradition. Her life is closely associated with Srivilliputhur in Tamil Nadu and her extraordinary devotion to Lord Vishnu.

According to the traditional account, Periyalvar, a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, discovered a baby girl beneath a Tulasi plant in his temple garden. He lovingly accepted her as a divine gift and named her Kothai, who later became known as Andal. From childhood, Andal's heart was devoted entirely to Lord Vishnu. She listened to her father speak about the Lord and gradually developed a deep desire to dedicate her life completely to Him.

Periyalvar prepared flower garlands every day to offer to the deity. Before the garlands were taken to the temple, Andal would secretly wear them herself and look at her reflection. She wanted to know whether the garland would be beautiful enough for her beloved Lord.

One day, her father discovered that Andal had worn the garland before it was offered. Believing that the garland was no longer suitable for worship, he became upset and prepared a new one. According to tradition, Lord Vishnu appeared in Periyalvar's dream and revealed that He preferred the garlands worn by Andal. From this beautiful episode came the name Soodi Kodutha Sudarkodi, meaning the radiant woman who offered garlands after wearing them.

Andal's devotion continued to deepen. She composed the Tiruppavai, thirty devotional verses expressing her love and surrender to Lord Vishnu. These verses are especially revered during the Tamil month of Margazhi and continue to be recited by devotees. She also composed Nachiyar Tirumozhi, expressing her intense longing for union with the Divine. According to the traditional account, Andal ultimately became united with Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam. Her story is therefore remembered as one of complete surrender, divine love, and unwavering devotion.

The life of Andal continues to inspire devotees because her devotion was not merely expressed through words—it shaped her entire life. Her story encourages sincerity in prayer, dedication, faith, humility, and complete surrender to the Divine. This andal vigraham brings that timeless devotional message into the home. Her graceful presence can remind devotees to approach worship with sincerity and to nurture faith and devotion in everyday life.
