During the period when India was fighting for independence from the British Empire, Birla was one of the most well-known businessmen in India. He was a member of the Birla family and the multibillionaire Birla Empire's founding father. He was raised in a lowly family in Pilani, India, where his grandpa was a moneylender by trade, as was customary in that area. But Birla carried him to Calcutta because she had higher hopes. In those difficult times, he founded a jute company in Calcutta and amassed the type of prosperity that was unattainable for an Indian businessman.

As a result, he swiftly built an empire spanning manufacturing, banking, tea, chemicals, cement, and other industries. His pioneering work established the Birla Empire's current state, and his astute commercial acumen brought him the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award. During his lifetime, Birla developed and invented several novel ideas in India. For example, he founded a manufacturing company in Calcutta when Indian merchants were not given the same privilege as British and Scottish merchants. He gradually grew it into a number of sectors, including banking, tea, steel tubes, chemicals, rayon, and cement. In his lifespan, he got married twice.
