Garuda - English

Hindu mythology features a mythological bird called the Garuda which is identified as the god Vishnu's vehicle mount. In general, Garuda is a serpent-hating defender who can move quickly through any area while remaining vigilant.

The eagle-faced son of Vinata and the sage Kashyapa, Garuda was stronger than all the devas of Indraloka. Thus, Indra's heaven trembled with horror when he was called to bring the portion of Amrit, or Nectar of Immortality, to free his mother from enslavement. This tale is included in the Mahabharata's Adi Parva. Stories from Amar Chitra Katha are a great way to introduce kids to Indian mythology.
