Vishu Kanni

One of the most important rituals of the Vishu festival is Vishu Kanni. It is celebrated in Kerala. The word “Kanni” means ‘first sight.’ Therefore, Vishu Kanni is the first sight of the day on Vishu morning. It is believed that if this sacred sight is seen on Vishu morning, it will bring good luck and happiness for the whole year. The concept behind this festival is extremely simple and beautiful. The first sight of the year is supposed to set the tone for the whole year. Therefore, it is prepared the previous night. It is full of abundance and peace. People wake up early in the morning and see this Kanni with devotion and calmness. Items Used in Vishu Kanni The Vishu Kanni is arranged in such a way that it includes many other items. Each of these items has its own significance. Collectively, they signify a complete and balanced life. 

The items used to make the Kanni include rice, fruits such as mango and banana, vegetables, coconut, betel leaves, and areca nuts. A metal mirror is placed in the middle of this Kanni. It is called ‘Val Kannadi.’ It is meant to remind us of our own reflection. Gold coins or ornaments are also placed in this Kanni. A holy book such as ‘Bhagavad Gita’ is also placed. People place a Krishna idol or picture in this Kanni as well. Yellow flowers called ‘Konna’ are extremely important. They add to the beauty of the Kanni and are considered extremely auspicious.

A traditional lamp, named "Nilavilakku," is lit to bring in divine light. All these objects are placed in a vessel named "Uruli." The whole setup is done in a neat and dedicated manner, usually by the eldest lady in the house.

The Ritual and Its Meaning

On Vishu morning, all members of the family wake up one by one. In traditional times, elders cover the eyes of younger members and take them to see Kanni. When they open their eyes, they are greeted by the beautiful sight of Kanni. It is a peaceful moment.

After seeing Kanni, all members of the house offer their prayers and seek divine blessings. It is a common ritual to perform "Vishu Kaineettam," in which elders give money to younger members, especially kids. It is a gesture of sharing. It is a happy moment for kids.

This ritual is not just about money and material things. It is more about starting a new year in a positive state of mind. It is a lesson for all of us to keep a positive attitude. It is a tradition followed in all houses, even in modern times, in a similar manner.

Why Vishu Kanni Still Matters Today

In today’s fast-paced life, such rituals help us to slow down and connect to our own tradition. If a person is living outside Kerala or in a city, they still try to maintain a small setup of Kanni in their house. It is not necessary to keep a grand setup. What is necessary is to have a positive intention behind doing so.

For many people, Vishu Kanni is also family bonding time. People wake up early in the morning, celebrate this occasion, and create memories for years to come. Kids will grow up learning all this in an organic manner.
