Vishu – Celebrating a New Year with Hope and Light

Vishu is one of the most important festivals celebrated in the state of Kerala. This is celebrated to mark the beginning of the Malayalam New Year. It is celebrated on April 14 every year. However, for many Malayali people, Vishu is not just a festival. It is more than that. It is a time for people to look forward to a new year with positivity, gratitude, and faith. “Vishu” is derived from the Sanskrit word “Vishuvam.” It means “equal.” It is a time in this season of the year when day and night are almost equal in length.

People believe that what they see in the morning on this day will influence their coming year. So, people prepare something called “Vishu Kani,” which is the first sight. This is done by carefully arranging Vishu Kani. This is a very important festival for people. It is associated with prosperity, good fortune, and new beginnings. There is happiness in homes, prayers in hearts, and the aroma of scrumptious food.

The Sacred Vishu Kani Tradition

The most important tradition during Vishu is preparing something called “Vishu Kani.” Kani means “the first sight.” Vishu Kani is a beautifully arranged sight of auspicious items placed in front of Lord Krishna's idol or picture. It is done on the night before Vishu.

The items that make up the Vishu Kani arrangement include rice, fruits, vegetables, coconut, betel leaves, areca nuts, a mirror named Val Kannadi, golden cucumber, sacred books like the Bhagavad Gita, coins, jewelry, and a traditional lamp named Nilavilakku. The bright yellow Konna flowers, also known as Cassia fistula, play a significant role in the Vishu Kani arrangement. These bright-colored flowers bloom in the month of Vishu. They symbolize good fortune and happiness.

In the early hours of the day, the elderly in the household wake up the children by closing their eyes and leading them to the prayer room. When the children open their eyes, the first thing they see is the Vishu Kani. This sacred vision is believed to bring good luck and wealth to the people.

Vishu Kaineettam – Sharing Blessings with Love

Another beautiful tradition that people follow in the month of Vishu is Vishu Kaineettam. In this tradition, people give money to children. Children look forward to this occasion because it is a blessing in disguise.

Giving Kaineettam to children is a way of sharing the blessings received in life. It also means spreading joy in the household. It reminds people that money can only bring joy when it is shared. Elders also give Kaineettam to people who work in their fields or to people in need.

Vishu Sadya – A Feast of Traditional Flavors

No Indian festival can ever be complete without food. In the month of Vishu, people prepare a traditional meal named Vishu Sadya. They place the food items on a banana leaf and eat the traditional meal.

Some of the dishes that are made during Vishu include rice, sambar, avial, thoran, olan, pachadi, and pickles. A sweet dish such as Payasam is an integral part of the meal as well. All these dishes provide a unique flavor to the meal, making it a delightful experience for everyone.

Sharing this meal is a happy event for everyone in the family. People sit together, eat together, and enjoy the festival. The meal represents the abundance that nature provides. The fireworks, prayers, and joys are an integral part of Vishu celebrations as well.

Fireworks, Prayers, and Festive Joy

Vishu celebrations include fireworks in many parts of Kerala, especially early in the morning. The kids enjoy this festival very much, as it gives a unique sound to the celebrations. The fireworks mark the beginning of the new year in an energetic and happy way.

People visit temples as an integral part of Vishu celebrations to offer prayers and seek the blessings of God for the coming year. The temples look very beautiful, and special prayers are conducted. People seek the blessings of God for prosperity, good health, and peace in their lives.

Vishu is also a time when people visit their relatives and friends, greet each other, and have quality time with their loved ones. The essence of the festival is togetherness, gratitude, and hope.

The Deeper Meaning of Vishu

Vishu, in essence, has a deeper meaning. It is a reminder to people to begin the new year with a positive attitude. Seeing the Vishu Kani is to invite good fortune into life.

Vishu also inculcates a sense of gratitude in people. All that is placed in the Kani, like grains, fruits, and wealth, are all gifts of nature. By giving them to God first, people show their gratitude for what they have received.

In a way, Vishu can also be regarded as a festival of renewal. It reminds people to leave their worries in the past and begin the new year with hope, kindness, and faith. That in essence makes Vishu a beautiful festival.
