The most important tradition during Vishu is preparing something called “Vishu Kani.” Kani means “the first sight.” Vishu Kani is a beautifully arranged sight of auspicious items placed in front of Lord Krishna's idol or picture. It is done on the night before Vishu.

The items that make up the Vishu Kani arrangement include rice, fruits, vegetables, coconut, betel leaves, areca nuts, a mirror named Val Kannadi, golden cucumber, sacred books like the Bhagavad Gita, coins, jewelry, and a traditional lamp named Nilavilakku. The bright yellow Konna flowers, also known as Cassia fistula, play a significant role in the Vishu Kani arrangement. These bright-colored flowers bloom in the month of Vishu. They symbolize good fortune and happiness.

In the early hours of the day, the elderly in the household wake up the children by closing their eyes and leading them to the prayer room. When the children open their eyes, the first thing they see is the Vishu Kani. This sacred vision is believed to bring good luck and wealth to the people.

Vishu Kaineettam – Sharing Blessings with Love

Another beautiful tradition that people follow in the month of Vishu is Vishu Kaineettam. In this tradition, people give money to children. Children look forward to this occasion because it is a blessing in disguise.

Giving Kaineettam to children is a way of sharing the blessings received in life. It also means spreading joy in the household. It reminds people that money can only bring joy when it is shared. Elders also give Kaineettam to people who work in their fields or to people in need.
