Moreshwar or Mayureshwar Vinayak Temple

Moreshwar or Mayureshwar Vinayak Temple

The first and foremost god of the Hindu religion, Ganesha, is the prominent deity in Maharashtra. Ganesha was the Kuladeivatha of the Great Marathas, and it was due to the efforts of the Great Shivaji Maharaj, the Ashatavinayak temples gained prominence across India. Mayureshwar, or Moreshawar, located in Morgaon village in the Pune District of Maharashtra, is the first of eight prominent Ashatavinayak temples in the state. The temple is about 70 km via the Jejuri-Morgaon Baramati Road and the Saswad-Bopdev-Pune Road.

According to the village legend, Lord Ganesha was born in the caves of Lenyadri during Treta Yuga to slay an asura named Sinduasur. To vanquish the asura, Ganesha took the incarnation of Mayureshwar with six hands and rode a peacock. Once the asura was slain, Lord Ganesha offered his peacock to Lord Karthikeya as a gift. That’s why Lord Ganesha is depicted riding a peacock at the Mayureshwar temple.

Located in a very convenient place and well connected to Pune, Mayureshwar or Moreshawar Ganapati temple is reachable by roadway, railway and airway, 70 kilometres from Pune.  The temple has an impressive architecture and is built on a wider space in a very picturesque location. The temple is 50 feet tall with four entrance gates opening in four directions. The North direction gate is the main entrance gate. A big Nandi erected facing the Moreshwar, which is very unusual in a Ganesha temple.

The devotees who visit the Ashtavinayak temples start their journey with Moreshwar and end the trip at Moreshwar after visiting all the other 7 Vinayak temples. There is a belief amongst the devotees that once the journey of the Ashatavinayak temple is completed, they receive Ashta Aishwarayam at their threshold through Lord Ganesha’s blessings.
