A Famous Temple in Mylapore

The name Kapaleeshwarar comes from an interesting story. Lord Brahma, the creator of the world, once lied to Lord Shiva. To punish him, Shiva removed one of Brahma’s heads (kapala). Because of this, Shiva got the name Kapaleeshwarar, meaning "Lord of the Skull."
Why is Mylapore Called the Land of Peacocks?
Another legend says that Goddess Parvati once got distracted while listening to Shiva. Shiva therefore cursed her to be reborn as a peahen, and then she worshiped Lord Shiva. (female peacock). In order to get rid of the curse, she prayed before Shiva, under a Punnai tree at Mylapore. Afterward, Shiva pardoned her, and the two were together again. This is also the reason why Mylapore has come to be known as Mayurapuri (Mayura is peacock in Sanskrit).

The Western Rajagopuram is 40 meters tall with seven levels.
It has colorful carvings showing Hindu gods, saints, and legends.
A famous carving shows Shiva dancing and competing with Goddess Kali.
2. The Main Sanctum
Lord Kapaleeshwarar (Shiva) is worshipped in Lingam form, facing west.
Only 40 Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu have this special west-facing design.
3. The Karpagambal Shrine
Goddess Karpagambal is the temple’s main goddess.
She is known as the Mother of Blessings and is worshipped for health, wealth, and happiness.
4. The Sacred Temple Tank (Kapali Tirtha)
A large water tank outside the temple, also called Shakti Tirtha or Mukti Tirtha.
Special floating festivals (Teppotsavam) are held here every year.
5. The Punnai Tree (A Tree with a Legend)
This is where Goddess Parvati prayed as a peacock.

The Amazing Story of Angam Poompavai
One of the most miraculous stories linked to this temple is about a young girl named Angam Poompavai. She was bitten by a poisonous snake and died. Her father, instead of performing final rites, kept her ashes in a pot, hoping for a miracle.
When Saint Tirujnyanasambandar came to Mylapore, he sang hymns to Lord Kapaleeshwarar, praying for Poompavai’s life. Suddenly, a miracle happened—Poompavai came back to life as a 12-year-old girl! This event shows the power of devotion and faith at the Kapaleeshwarar Temple.
