Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal was the 69th pontiff of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham. He was one of the most influential spiritual leaders of the recent past. His life epitomised the vitality of tradition and spirituality serving society. His celebration of Aradhana is as much about reminiscence of his Siddhi day as it is about introspection of his principles of life.

Early Life and Spiritual Calling

Born as Subrahmanyam Mahadeva Iyer on 18 July 1935, in Tamil Nadu, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal was chosen by his guru, Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Mahaswamigal, at a very tender age to propagate this ancient school of Advaita Vedanta. He took Sanyasa in 1954 and became Sri Jayendra Saraswathi.

From the outset of his papacy, he was found to have a strong appreciation for tradition, matched by a solid awareness of the requirements of contemporary society, and this characterised his long spiritual journey.

Spirituality Through Service

Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal believed in the expression of spirituality through action. He was often referred to as “Kriya Shakti”, literally “force of action”. Under his leadership, activities at the Kanchi Math were extended far beyond rituals and discourses.

He has been a major influence in setting up and facilitating various charitable institutions such as Sankara Nethralaya, Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital, and Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya, where people of all castes are being served with dignity and compassion.

Service to humanity was equal to worship for him, as he thought that service to fellow humans was a direct route to spiritual advancement.

Jana Kalyan Movement and Social Harmony

Through the Jana Kalyan movement, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal actively engaged himself with the Dalits and the poor members of the community. He uplifted the members of the community by renovating temples and wholeheartedly including everyone with the given importance.

He was also a part of the attempt to foster dialogue and harmony in the context of the Ayodhya dispute from a mediating position with the sole objective of peaceful understanding and national unity. His intention was always to sustain a state of calmness and equanimity along with respect for all views.

Global Outreach and Pilgrimage

Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal further spread the message of Sanatana Dharma outside the boundaries of India. He embarked on spiritual pilgrimages to Kailash Mansarovar, Nepal, and Bangladesh. These pilgrimages helped him further strengthen the association through messages of peace and harmony that spread beyond the geographical limitations of Indian society.

Aradhana and Continuing Legacy

Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal achieved Siddhi in the year 2018, and his Brindavanam is located at Shrimatam, Kanchipuram. His Aradhana is celebrated every year with devotion and gratitude.

The celebrations of the 7th Aradhana of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal were conducted from March 9th to 11th, 2025, at Shrimatam, Kanchipuram. The events during these three days were held in the form of Veda Parayanam, special pujas, spiritual discourses, bhajans, and annadaanam. All devotees

Once the Siddhi was completed, the duties of the Peetham went on as before under the aegis of the 70th Pontiff of the Peetham, Sri Vijayendra Saraswati Swamigal, as always committed to the cause of Dharma, Seva, and Karunya.

A Life That Continues to Inspire

Even today, the legacy of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal can be felt through the institutions and values he propagated throughout his life. His life is a reminder that spirituality always comes hand-in-hand with responsibility, care, and action.
