Guru Pradosh Vrat / Pradosham - A Sacred Evening Dedicated to Lord Shiva
Pradosham is one of the most important fasts for devotees of Lord Shiva. It is observed twice every month on the Trayodashi tithi. When this sacred day falls on a Thursday it is known as Guru Pradosh Vrat and it is considered even more powerful. The word Pradosham refers to the time just before sunset, when the energies in the universe are believed to be calm and supportive for worship. Shiva devotees believe that prayers done during this period bring quick blessings and remove long-standing obstacles.
Meaning and Significance
Guru Pradosh carries the combined blessings of Lord Shiva and the planet Jupiter also called Guru or Brihaspati. Jupiter represents wisdom, knowledge, prosperity as well as good fortune. So fasting and praying on Guru Pradosh is said to purify the mind help devotees make better decisions and attract positive growth in life.
According to ancient texts, the devas once prayed to Shiva during the Pradosh period to protect them from suffering. Pleased with their devotion Shiva danced the Ananda Tandava and blessed them. Because of this divine event, the Pradosh time is seen as very auspicious.
How Devotees Observe the Vrat
Most people begin the day with a clean bath and follow a simple or partial fast. Some take fruits and milk, while others choose a full-day fast depending on their health. Visiting a Shiva temple in the evening is considered very important. Devotees offer bilva leaves, water, sandal paste, incense & flowers to the Shiva Linga.
The Pradosh puja usually begins around 4.30 to 6.00 pm, depending on local timing. The Shiva Panchakshari mantra “Om Namah Shivaya” is chanted many times to seek inner peace. Special prayers are also offered to Goddess Parvati and Lord Nandi, who always stays near Shiva and carries the devotees’ prayers to him.
