The Birth of a Divine Leader

Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti is celebrated to honor the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh Ji the tenth Guru of Sikhism. This day is a very sacred day for the followers of Sikhism throughout India as well as several parts of the globe. It was the year 1666 when Guru Gobind Singh Ji took birth at Patna Sahib, in Bihar. During his childhood, he portrayed excellent strength in his character, wisdom, and sense of justice. His life had been led by faith and an unwavering force of commitment to Dharma.

Becoming the Tenth Guru at a Young Age

Guru Gobind Singh Ji took over as the Sikh Guru when he was just nine years old after his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, faced martyrdom to save people's rights to practice their faith with freedom. That sad incident influenced young Guru Gobind Singh Ji and shaped his life trajectory thereafter. Instead of being fearful, it filled him with determination to protect truth and righteousness, come what may.

Establishment of the Khalsa Panth

One of the most pivotal moments in the land of the Sikhs took place in the year 1699, when Guru Gobind Singh Ji established the Khalsa Panth. On the day of Vaisakhi, he initiated a new order of devoted Sikhs who promised to live by high moral values and fearlessness. He introduced the Five K's: Kesh, Kara, Kanga, Kachera, and Kirpan, which symbolize disciplining oneself, faith, and preparedness to lead the struggle against injustice. With this act, Sikhs were given a strong identity and brought together as a brotherhood of equals.

How Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti Is Celebrated

Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti normally falls in the month of Pausha according to the lunar calendar. The day starts early with prayers and the reading of the Guru Granth Sahib at Gurudwaras. Scores of devotees participate in Akhand Path and devotional singing of kirtans. Nagar Kirtans, a religious procession, are organized in many places, disseminating the messages of peace and unity. Langar, community meals served free of cost, is distributed to one and all, reflecting that everybody is equal is the teaching of Guru Granth Sahib.

The life and teachings of Guru Gobind Singh Ji inspire people even now. He had believed that true spirituality is not only about prayer, but also action; he taught people to live with courage, protect the weak ones, and stand firmly for justice.
