  • Ramana Maharshi (30 December 1879 – 14 April 1950) was an Indian sage and jivanmukta. He was born Venkataraman Iyer, but is most commonly known under the name Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi. He was born in what is now Tiruchuli, Tamil Nadu, India. In 1895 an attraction to the holy hill Arunachala and the 63 Nayanars was aroused in him, and in 1896, at the age of 16, he had a "death-experience" in which he became aware of a "current" or "force" (avesam) which he recognised as his true "I" or "self", which he later identified with Ishvara.

  • Thai Pongal is one of the most important Tamil festivals and is observed in the Tamil Month Thai. Thai Pongal 2017 date is January 14. Pongal takes its name from the famous traditional Tamilian food of the same name and is dedicated to Lord Surya or the Sun God.
  • Sri Thyagaraja Aradhana Festival at Thiruvaiyaru is dedicated to Saint Thyagarajar, the greatest saint composer of Carnatic music. In 2017, the date of Thyagaraja Aradhana Festival is January 13 to January 17. The Tyagaraja Aradhana Festival is observed on the fifth day after full moon in the Telugu month of Pushya. It is the day when Sri Thyagaraja attained Samadhi. The 170th Aradhana Festival Pancha Rathna Keerthana is on 17th January 2017.
