Tamil month Aadi (July- August) in the Tamil calendar is the time which is filled with various spiritual and religious activities. This is the beginning of the Summer Solstice and the Sun starts moving towards the Southern direction. Especially during this month, people involve in various spiritual and religious activities and are aligned with the spiritual energy. This month is also dedicated to Goddess Shakti as the energy of the goddess is very strong and vibrant during this month.

Krittika Nakshatra is the 3rd among the 27 stars. This day is considered to be very auspicious and one of the best times of propitiating Lord Muruga, as the birth star of Lord Muruga is Krittika.

Significance of Aadi Kirthigai

Goddess Parvati blessed Karthigai Pengal (six maidens) who nurtured the six babies born from Lord Shiva’s third eye, with a boon that special rituals or Poojas will be held on Krittika Nakshatra for Lord Muruga. The Tamil month of Aadi is considered highly auspicious, when divine forces blesses the Earth with their grace and answer your prayers.

Aadi month falls on the second half of the year, which is called as Dakshinayanam, when the Sun transits from Northern to Southern Hemisphere. Hence, the entire month of Aadi is ideal for special prayers and Pooja offered to Gods and Goddesses.

Rituals of Aadi Kirthigai

Apart from the Pooja and homa at temples, in general, special and elaborate celebrations are organized in Arupadai Veedu (Six abodes of Lord Muruga namely - Tiruttani, Thiruchendur, Swamimalai, Palani, Pazhamudircholai and Thirupparankundram. Chanting of mantras and hymns, Kavadi Attam (a traditional dance) are performed by devotees. Some devotees also undertake fasting.
